These maple leaves are common enough in the east, but in the desert Southwest there are only a few places where they grow in any numbers. You usually have to know where, and be willing to walk a bit, to find them. These are in McKettrick Canyon, Guadalupe Mountains National Park between El Paso, Texas and Carlsbad, New Mexico.
